The non-profit association
Ferrmed has requested to give absolute priority to the Mediterranean railway corridor that will pass through the Andalusian coast, which in principle would have a route from Algeciras to Almeria, passing of course, through Málaga.
The cost of implementation of this project would almost be of 8,200 million euros (10,800 million if the project is extended from Algeciras to Alicante), but according to estimates, would provide an annual profit of nearly 700 million euros (about 46 million arising from the passage of merchandise and 536 million from passengers), which would repay the investment in less than 14 years.
This association and several municipalities of the Costa del Sol are committed to the construction of a railway line by the Andalusian coast that would bring passengers and merchandise. The sections to be constructed would be:
The first section:
From Algeciras to Malaga with a length of 126 km and a cost of 2,900 million euros.
The second section:
From Malaga to Almeria 213 miles and a cost of € 5,277 million.

The project:
The project which was presented by the Secretary General of Ferrmed, the mayor of Málaga and several business representatives, concluded that the implementation of this project would be very profitable and it would have a great environmental impact as, amongst various aspects, using these railway lines would lead to saving 152,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
The project, on the western Costa del Sol section, would have a direct connection to Malaga airport and the railway station Maria Zambrano.
This project, informed the Secretary General of Ferrmed, was delivered to the Spanish Ministry of Development, the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Regional Government of Murcia, councils, municipalities, other organizations and the European Parliament for review and future approval, but the creators of the project have also stressed the need to exercise "certain pressure" towards the Spanish Government and the European Commission for the creation of this line, so that this area is included in the main trans-European network.
