Puerto José Banús, more commonly known as Puerto Banús is located to the west of Marbella, between the Golden Mile and San Pedro de Alcántara. It was built by José Banús, a property developer and close friend of Francisco Franco, as a luxury marina and shopping complex.

This resort was designed by the visionary architect Arnold Schreck, who, after designing many buildings in Acapulco and Beverly Hills, was hired by Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe to design the Marbella Club Hotel.

When Arnold Schreck met José Banús in Marbella, he convinced him that the idea of building a marina and shopping complex with huge towers, as it was common practice in most coastal resorts in those days, would not attract the wealthy families that Mr. Banús expected to have residing in this complex. Instead, he proposed to create a Mediterranean looking village, with sophisticated style and Andalucian charm. Puerto Banús was inaugurated in May of 1970.

This resort instantly became the playground for the jet-set with its world renowned designer's boutiques, its casino, excellent shopping centres, stylish bars and restaurants, glamorous night-clubs, fantastic beach clubs and exclusive marina filled with superb yachts.

The marina is flanked on either side by fantastic blue flag quality beaches, each of them with their beautiful promenades, which will take you all the way down to Marbella centre if one heads east and to San Pedro de Alcántara if one heads west.

During the daytime Puerto Banús offers a wealth of facilities and attractions to cater the whole family. One can enjoy anything from a boat trip around the coast to different water sports, sunbathe on the beach, go to the cinema Gran Marbella to watch a movie in original language, play a round of golf in one of the many fantastic golf courses, enjoy a meal in one of the many varied restaurants or chiringuitos (beach bars) and shop in El Corte Inglés department store or in any of its upmarket fashion boutiques. During the summer months, in the main square there is an open air market, where one can enjoy shopping or children use the play area.

During the night time the port turns into the place to visit on the Costa del Sol if someone is looking for a varied and busy nightlife scene. In the summer months the shops stay open until midnight and many of the restaurants stay open even later than that. For those who want to dance the night away, there are many bars, night clubs and beach club parties which all keep going until dawn.

Synonymous with wealth, extravagant parties, high fashion and glitz, with over 5 million visitors a year, Puerto Banús is one of the most famous and most visited towns on the Costa del Sol.
